Refreshing the Community

As spring arrives, our team turns its attention to one of the most visible parts of our community: landscaping. Beautiful grounds do not happen by chance. They come from thoughtful planning, seasonal preparation, and steady attention to detail.

After winter, I take a proactive approach to refreshing our outdoor spaces. My goal is to keep them visually appealing, safe, and enjoyable for residents. As the Arrow Plant Operations Director at The Madison Senior Living, I focus on the steps that help our community look its best each spring.

Supporting Long-Term Growth

For the spring refresh, my team evaluates the areas that need attention. We prioritize updates that support healthy, long-term growth.

I replant trees in the spring rather than the fall. This gives them the best chance to establish successfully. If an area does not look fresh and well maintained, I request touch-ups and fresh mulch. If mulch reaches three inches or higher, I call for removal to prevent buildup.

So far, we have submitted capital expenditure quotes to remove five trees and plant new ones. Our team is also properly staking one tree. We are working with the sprinkler company to adjust sprinkler heads so they do not spray residents’ windows.

I use TELS checklists along with my own checklist to ensure each project meets expectations. I hold the work to a high standard. I want the finished result to look good enough for my own grandparents’ yard.

After the work is complete, I review each step to confirm nothing was missed. I also step back and assess the finished area. This helps ensure it blends naturally with the surrounding landscape.

Planning Ahead

Some common spring startup issues include sprinkler heads that are buried or not spraying properly. We work with the landscaping company to address problems as they arise. We also complete a full evaluation of the existing system.

This includes reviewing blueprints to identify where sprinkler heads are located.

Next season, I plan to start the capital expenditure process earlier. This will help approvals move forward sooner.

It is easy to see the finished product, but real success comes from teamwork. Coordination, accountability, and pride help bring each project together. These efforts ensure The Madison Senior Living continues to meet the standards residents expect while setting the tone for the months ahead.
