Do you remember the days when the lunch bell rang, signaling the excitement of discovering the treasures hidden in your lunch box? Join me as I take a trip down memory lane, revisiting some items—some I’d rather forget—and the iconic snacks and treats that fueled my childhood adventures and satisfied my youthful cravings.
Growing up, I preferred school-provided lunches because I always enjoyed the pizza, frozen OJ sticks, delicious rolls, and desserts they offered. I had school lunch in the 70s and 80s, a time when everything was made from scratch. The strangest thing I saw on the school menu was Chicken à la King. My mom never made it; she usually stuck to a meat and potatoes routine. On the occasional days when I brought lunch from home, my favorite thing to find was a basic peanut butter and jelly sandwich with fruit, veggies, and a Twinkie.
If I could recreate one school lunch item from scratch, it would be the classic rectangle pizza. My ultimate school lunch menu would include pizza, orange slices, a brownie, and a garden salad.
It’s important to ensure a well-balanced and nutritious packed meal, with containers that fit the correct portions and keep the food safe.
For a breakfast box, I’d like to see a breakfast bar to kick-start the day. For a dinner box, something light and healthy would be a great way to end the day.
Even though we’ve traded our lunch boxes for grown-up alternatives and our tastes have evolved, the nostalgia of those beloved treats still reminds us of the innocence and delight of youth. I hope you can find some classic favorites and discover new tempting treats every time you visit The Madison Senior Living Bistro or Country Kitchen and that you never stop making culinary memories.
