Staff Spotlight: Why We Choose Senior Living Culinary

Category: Culinary

Author: Tyler Sproston, Culinary Director

Every great meal starts with someone who cares.

Behind every breakfast served, every decorated brunch buffet, and every favorite recipe prepared is a team of dedicated culinary professionals who choose to make a difference every single day. While many cooks, servers, and dishwashers could work in traditional restaurants, they have chosen a different path—one where the people they serve become neighbors, friends, and even family.

In this Staff Spotlight, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who make our dining programs special. Their stories remind us that senior living is about much more than preparing and serving meals—it’s about creating comfort, building relationships, celebrating life’s moments, and making every resident feel at home.

We asked members of our culinary teams to share why they chose senior living and what makes this work so meaningful. Here are their stories.

Discover why culinary team members at The Madison choose senior living, where food creates trust, comfort, connection, and lasting memories.

Finding Joy in Serving Seniors

As Culinary Director at The Madison, I know dining in senior living offers something deeply meaningful. I started working in senior living when I was 28. Ten years later, my mom moved into that same senior living community.

That experience made the work even more personal. Residents need safe spaces, good food, trusted company, and people they can count on. My love for food started long before senior living. Still, I quickly learned that preparing meals for seniors brought me more joy than cooking for strangers I might never see again.

The relationship between a chef, a server, and a resident is special. It is unique, personal, and built over time. I would not trade that connection for the world.

Residents have taught me that everyone needs someone to lean on. We all need a helping hand. We also need a good laugh over an even better meal. Those moments can make any day brighter.

One favorite tradition is Holiday Cheer. It is a special experience because everyone is involved. Residents and team members are excited to see what comes next. That shared energy makes the season feel joyful and connected.

Caring in the Quiet Moments

Success in culinary in senior living starts with truly caring about other people. It takes a selfless and genuinely kind person to serve others well. That is especially true when caring for seniors.

The moments that show the impact of this work are not always big or formal. Often, they are quiet moments. They happen in early morning hellos, shared meals, and trusted daily routines.

Sometimes, it is sitting with a gentleman who just lost his wife. Other times, it is knowing a resident trusts the team to deliver his food when he is out for appointments. It can also be the resident who says very little all day, then comes alive during mealtime.

These moments matter. The late-night “see you tomorrows” matter, too. They remind us that this work is about presence, trust, and connection.

Every member of our culinary team has a unique story, but they all share one thing in common—a passion for serving others.

Whether they’re preparing a resident’s favorite comfort food, celebrating a birthday, or simply greeting someone with a smile, their work goes far beyond the kitchen. They create moments of joy, foster meaningful relationships, and help make our communities feel like home.

To every cook, server, dishwasher, and culinary leader who chooses senior living over a traditional restaurant, thank you. Your compassion, dedication, and commitment to hospitality make a lasting impact on the lives of our residents every single day.

Together, we’re not just serving meals—we’re serving memories.
