Senior living has certainly changed over the past decade. An industry that once provided very little hands-on care has blossomed into a wonderful option for older adults. It now provides varying levels of assistance with residents’ activities of daily living, while arranging many opportunities for socialization and community. I am fortunate to work for Arrow Senior Living leading The Madison Senior Living team. I would like to share a little about my journey to becoming a senior living leader.
I began my career many years ago as a nurse’s aide. My great grandma and grandma were both nurses and greatly influenced my love of nursing. I always loved hearing stories of the past, and developed a strong passion for helping older adults live their lives with dignity and as much independence as possible.
Caring for the older ones we love and teaching others to also share that passion and expectation of good care has kept me in senior living. Working in healthcare with older adults has changed over the last 30 years. We have made strides to improve and understand the aging process and dementia. It brings me happiness to fulfill the needs of others; I try to bring enjoyable experiences to residents every day.
I had heard of and been following Arrow Senior Living for a time before I became a part of the community. Arrow is an ever-evolving and growing company and has the reputation to think outside the box and lead with love, all qualities which are important to me.
In the coming months and years, I see alternative options for older adults who are living longer. Despite the constant need of dementia education, I do see great opportunities for growth. I would love to see better options for people in situations, much like mine, where there is a need for care for an adult child, while also being faced with my parent’s aging. I would like to see alternative lifestyles with possibilities of multi-generational living options.
For someone considering a position in senior living management, I would tell them it is a very demanding, yet rewarding, career. Health Care/Senior Living management offers the ability to impact the lives of older adults both directly and indirectly. It also provides the opportunity to facilitate positive change and growth in the senior world.
