Cultivating Community Culture

Category: Culture & Traditions

Author: Kelela Kiyono, Resident Services Director

As Resident Services Director at The Madison Senior Living, I am the energy and engagement designer of the community. My job description specifically states I am to be a “Culture Creator.” Each day, I work to set the perfect tone for our community events and resident engagements. Providing socialization opportunities in senior living is more than just playing the beloved game of bingo. Beyond the events, essential amenities, and daily care lies the heartbeat of every community – a culture that fosters connection, purpose, and a sense of belonging.

Each monthly calendar features events tailored to the residents’ interests, focusing on key programming elements: physical, cognitive, spiritual, sensory, and social. We always celebrate major holidays in a big way, incorporating traditions from various cultures based on our residents’ backgrounds. Unique to The Madison and Arrow Senior Living, each month, we also celebrate several Arrow Traditions. These include focusing on Black History Month, Mom and Pop Small Business Day, Be Kind to Humankind Week, and so many more!

A joyful group of seniors, donning green hats and beads, celebrate St. Patrick's Day at The Madison Senior Living during a lively community parade.

Embracing Diversity and Fostering Unity Through Cultural Celebrations

In celebration of Asian Pacific Islander Month, I find great joy in sharing my heritage with the community through various activities, such as visual storytelling, cooking demonstrations, and simply spreading the spirit of “aloha” among our residents. Like the sentiment expressed in Lilo and Stitch, “Ohana means family, and family means nobody gets left behind.” Here at The Madison, both residents and staff are my “ohana,” and we support and uplift one another.

Culture holds immense significance in the realm of senior living. We all come from diverse backgrounds and carry our own cultural heritage and beliefs, instilled in us from birth. Our world today is a tapestry of diverse cultures, and senior living communities mirror this diversity. Culture permeates our conversations, memories captured in photographs, celebrations, and the bonds we form with one another. Sharing aspects of our culture with others fosters understanding and appreciation, making us the unique individuals we are today. At The Madison, we live together as a culturally diverse family, embracing and celebrating our differences while building meaningful connections.

Every senior living community has its own culture built around the engagement and interactions of the residents. I am proud to set the stage for socialization and events for my residents as we continue building and expanding our culture at The Madison Senior Living.
